The Theory of Plate Tectonics
The word plate tectonics means how the Earth’s surface is made up of plates! In geology, a plate is a large piece of rock, while tectonics is a Greek word which means to build. However, the plates of tectonics are all moving in different directions and at different speeds from 2 cm to 10 cm per year, about the speed at which your fingernails grow! However, Alfred Wegner announced that the continents would turn like the crust of ocean basins, which would explain why the outlines of many coastlines (like South America and Africa) look like they fit together like a puzzle! The theory came from the 1960s and 1970s as new information was taken about the character of the ocean floor. And there are 18 small plates and 7 major ones and they are : 1: Eurasian 2: North American 3: South American 4: African 5: Australian 6: Antarctican 7: Pacific
